On Saturday night, we announced the end of season awards for 2019/20.
Due to be originally held in April, the dinner was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic currently going on.
This didn't stop the players getting together to find out the winners of each of the awards over Zoom video. You can find the winners below along with a quote from our Head Coach Graeme Paterson and one from club captain Michael Maltman.
1XV Player of the Year - Danny Owenson
“Danny displayed the desired levels of consistancy throughout the season and met the new demands of Premiership rugby. He knows the game very well and can influence a game, some of that is down to the position he plays, but a lot of it is down to his skills and ability to work under pressure. Danny takes a lot of pressure off his shoulders and heaps it on his own shoulders, more often than not, while performing his role as the team’s goalkeeper." - Graeme Paterson
1XV Player's Player of the Year - Colin Arthur
“Colin was voted for by his peers given his hard running style, big physique and big character both on and off the pitch. He’s a good ball player with the skills of a back line and the appearance of a front row. My best memory from last season was his superb kick (from their own 40 yard line) which landed in the opposition’s 22 and eventually resulted in a score.” - Club Captain Michael Maltman
Young Player of the Year - Freddie Roddick
“Freddie joined Musselburgh at the start of the year and slotted right into the ethos of the club. On the field he started the season well and after an injury setback it was clear that he was making an impact both in terms of his attacking qualities and also his aggressive defence. There was a clear correlation in the upturn of results and Freddie’s return to the squad and has shown we made the right decision to invite him to join and he made the right decision to come along and be an integral part of the team." - Graeme Paterson
2XV Player of the Year - Tom Foley
“Tom has made a breakthrough this season in terms of senior rugby. He’s a quiet man who does his talking with his tries for both the 2XV and the 1XV. A powerful runner with great pace, he has shone throughout the season in whatever role he has had to take on and was one of the major catalysts in the 2XV ending the season on a high, using his physical presence to dominate the game and motivate others." - Graeme Paterson
2XV Player's Player of the Year
“Graeme optimises what it means to give it all for Musselburgh Rugby Club. On the field he is one of the most committed and knowledgable players and off the pitch he takes on responsibility and improving the 2XV environment. He clearly has the full respect of his fellow players and coaching and this award is a tangible recognition of his efforts." - Graeme Paterson
Most Improved Player of the Year - Matthew Crain
“He has stepped up with every game and improved his individuals skills. He pushed the boundaries all he could in a positive manner and more than a few opposition players have ended up on the wrong end of a good clear out or tackle from Matthew when not expecting it. He will be consider a threat to those currently occupying the 1XV jerseys in the back row. - Graeme Paterson
Congratulations to all the winners. There will also be youth and mini rugby awards being handed out this weekend on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.
